Reused, or second-life, lithium-ion batteries still have plenty of juice left, but so far, the concept of using those batteries for stationary applications has not gained any real market traction.
A study published in Applied Energy by Matthews and five other current and former researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology concluded that lithium-ion batteries can have a beneficial second life as backup storage for utility-scale solar PV installations, where they can run for ten years or longer in this low-demand role.
Researchers at Cornell University, funded partly by the US National Science Foundation, recently published a study outlining ways to repurpose used lithium-ion electric car batteries in ways that could lower their carbon footprint. Work is now underway on developing battery-recycling processes that minimize the lifecycle impacts of using lithium-ion and other types of batteries in vehicles. Lithium-ion batteries are now used in most handheld consumer electronics, such as phones and laptops, due to their higher power-per-unit-mass ratio than other electric power storage systems.
